My review of Birdplane by Tonya Coffey

Rating: 4 Stars

Review:
A cute children’s book with bright pictures and an inspiring story. My four-year-old enjoyed it as well as her older sister. Quick, adorable read for children under the age of seven.

Our Turn

My mouth was dry, my hands sweaty
His shoulder brushed against mine
He offered me a nervous smile
As we stood there side by side

The others gone before us
Had been amazing, nearly flawless
But we had practiced hard
If that was any solace

Still, I shook some as I stood
Though it was hardly from nerves
I was ready, anxious to begin
Even if he had his reserves

The second couple left the stage
Smiles across their faces
The third couple swept by us
To quickly take their places

Curious to see their performance
I tried to calm my twitching body
I examined their stance, arms, legs
Their costumes bright and gaudy

We can beat them, I thought
Their performance hardly a thriller
We were next, but time ran slow
The anticipation a killer

Finally, the man swept her up
And carried her off the stage
My partner grabbed my hand in his
He was ready to engage

I breathed a sigh of relief
Said a prayer for luck
Took one step, then a second
As our first chord was struck

2018: The Year for Series Books

Happy New Year, everyone!

I hope 2017 was a pleasant year. I read many books, wrote some new poetry, and made amazing new friends.

This year, I plan to focus more on book series. I hope to finish the next book in the Fluffy Folktales series before the end of the year. The title for the next installment is Beauty and the Beastly Herb Gardener. This one is going to be as much fun to write as Once Upon a Pastry was, and hopefully just as much fun to read!

Kyra and I will be working on the third installment in the Spunky’s Magical Adventures series. Though it is currently untitled, it will involve mermaids and underwater candy creatures. Kyra, the co-author and illustrator, is especially excited to get started on this new project.

Now on to something new. I have begun writing on a new children’s series for middle-grade. A science fiction/fantasy story, this series will focus on a group of children who become stuck on another world. More serious minded than our previous stories, this will not be a picture book, but will certainly bring out the best of your imagination. The first book of the Tales of Mentara series will be coming out before you know it.

That’s it for announcements. I hope everyone has a wonderful 2018, and keep reading indie!

Little Elves

It’s rather late, I hear a sound
It gives me quite a fright
Little elves come have come around
Please clean my house tonight

I see you darting here and there
From the corner of my eye
I know I’m not supposed to stare
But even still, I try

I don’t mind you living here
Or visiting once or twice
Your presence gives me lots of cheer
I prefer you over mice

But if you want to sleep in my home
And nibble at my food
Maybe you could contribute some
Helping hands would be good

You could sweep the floors or beat the rug
Maybe take out the trash
Put dishes away without breaking a mug
It isn’t too much to ask

I hold magical creatures dear
If you want to stay, then come
But you have to earn your place here
Freeloaders are not welcome!

Hello, everyone.

I just wanted to pop in and announce that What Money Can’t Buy has a new cover! I was having issues with the paperback edition of the original cover, so I decided to create my own using an old photo I took and hours of digital tinkering.

Extra Life

Last year in October, at the age of twelve, my oldest daughter Kassidy was diagnosed with NHL, Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Luckily, it was found early. After two tough rounds of chemo, she is now in remission. Kassidy was positive through it all, even making friends at the hospital. The nurses there loved her. Even when she lost her hair, she was upbeat and fun to be around. Now thirteen and back in school, she is doing well.

Kassidy

Kassidy is joining the Extra Life team this year. Extra Life is an annual charity event for gamers. Every year in November, people join together to play tabletop, console, phone, card, or any kind of game for 24 hours to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This charity raises millions of dollars each year for hospitals. This is my fourth year participating and I am proud to have two of my daughters joining my team.
Kassidy will be raising money for CHKD, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, the hospital that treated her while she had cancer. This is an amazing hospital with a wonderful staff. Top notch doctors and friendly, pleasant nurses made such a trying time for our family more bearable.

Please consider donating to Extra Life this year. ALL donations go to the hospital of the player’s choice. Any amount helps, even just a few dollars. Donating is safe and easy.
